ISOLA
DI VENTOTENE |
|
|
|
| |
Little pearl
in the Tirreno sea, eternally exposed to the wind ( in Italian
“vento”, from which the name), it was place for
the exile of many important people since the roman age: Giulia,
emperor Augustus’ daughter, Agrippina, Germanicus’
wife and Ottavia, Nero’s wife, while in more recent
times Sandro Pertini , former Italian President of Republic,
who was confined here by the fascist regime.
Ventotene surprises not only with its beauty and not only
because it has been changing from place of penalty in place
for holidays; it surprises also because here the remains of
the roman age are still alive and still play the same roll
they played two thousand years ago. The roman harbour in fact
is still in use: the dock and its bollards, its warehouses,
all dug in the soft volcanic rock, are the still the same
of that time. Nothing in Ventotene can force you to be in
a hurry: the beauty of the transparent sea, the wild nature,
the sea caves, the ancient remains |
