One of the
most lively tourist centres of the cost, where probably the
legendary Amyclae, founded by Spartans, arose. The town was
chosen as a sea resort by the Roman emperors, first of all
Tiberius, and by distinguished Roman citizens. The town has
kept some remains of medieval walls and traditional white
Mediterranean houses, combined with picturesque stairways
and alleys.
A Lazio’s Capri with its natural beauty, it is a meeting
place for the international jet-set since 1950.
We advise a charming walk through the narrow lanes, the most
quaint area of the town, centre of nightlife with bar, boutiques
and shops open all night long. Sperlonga is the favourite
destination of the youth, that plays guitar under the stars.
Very interesting is the Tiberius Cave, directly on the sea:
an evocative hollow that was included in the Tiberius private
villa, where he cherished his collection of Homeric subjects
(II cent. B.C.).
Findings coming from the cave are now kept in the National
Archaeological Museum of the town. |
