One of the
most interesting towns of the cost, both for its special position
on the homonymous gulf and for its scenic neighbourhoods.
According to the latin poet Virgil, it owes its name to Cajieta,
Enea’s wet-nurse, who is buried here.
Place for holidays for the ancient Romans, Gaeta is today
a wonderful seaside town: favoured by its warm weather, it
offers all sort of tourist equipments together with many historic,
religious and naturalistic sites. It surprises for the presence
of green headlands and sandy inlets, isolated creeks and splendid
sea caves.
The old part of the town is typically medieval. Narrow streets,
a big castle, Norman bell-towers and ancient walls give shape
to S. Erasmo quarter. From here you can easily get to the
regional city park of Monte Orlando; here the sea is certified
“Blue Oasis”, a special recognition for the cleanest
sea given by the WWF, worldwide association for the environment’s
defence.
Inside the park you can visit the L. Manuzio Planco’s
Mausoleum, the Split Mountain and the ancient fortifications
that remind you of the glorious and warlike past of the town.
